What is outpatient rehab?
Outpatient rehab is addiction treatment you attend on a scheduled basis while living at home — rather than staying overnight at a facility. You come in for therapy and clinical support several times a week, then return to your daily routine. It works well for people with a stable home environment, those stepping down from inpatient or detox, and anyone whose responsibilities make a residential stay impractical. Because you’re not paying for room and board, outpatient care is also typically far more affordable than inpatient rehab.
Outpatient vs. inpatient — which is right for you?
Inpatient (residential) rehab means living at a facility full-time, best suited to severe addiction, an unstable home, or a high risk of relapse without 24/7 structure. Outpatient rehab lets you live at home and is ideal once you’re medically stable and have support around you. Many people do both in sequence — detox or inpatient first, then outpatient to maintain progress. Not sure where you fall? Our team will help you figure it out in a free, confidential consultation.
Our outpatient programs (levels of care)
We offer a full continuum of outpatient care and match you to the right level — then step you up or down as you progress.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) — Our most structured outpatient option: full days of treatment, multiple days a week, for those who need intensive support without overnight stays.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) — A flexible middle tier: several sessions a week of group and individual therapy, designed to fit around work and family.
- Supportive Outpatient Program (SOP) — Our lightest-touch level for ongoing maintenance and relapse prevention as you transition back to everyday life.

Frequently asked questions
Does outpatient rehab work?
Yes. For people who are medically stable and have a supportive home environment, research shows outpatient treatment can be as effective as inpatient care — with the added benefit of practicing recovery skills in real life as you go.
How long does outpatient rehab take?
It varies by level of care and individual progress. PHP and IOP often run several weeks to a few months, with the intensity tapering over time. Supportive outpatient care can continue as long as it’s helpful.
Does insurance cover outpatient rehab?
Most major plans cover IOP and PHP. We verify your specific benefits for free before you start.
What’s the difference between IOP and PHP?
PHP is more intensive — more hours per day and more days per week — while IOP is more flexible and fits around work or school. Many clients step down from PHP to IOP as they stabilize.
Can I work while in outpatient rehab?
Yes — that’s the point. Sessions are scheduled so most clients keep working or attending school throughout treatment.
